2008 Stickel Award Winner G.D. Heda!
Posted 5/22/2009

The American Podiatric Medical Association (APMA) has announced that the 2008 William J. Stickel Award for Research in Podiatric Medicine has been awarded to "Role of Tissue-Type Plasminogen Activator in Salicylic Acid-Induced Sloughing of Human Corn Tissue," written by Ghanshyam D. Heda, PhD, and Lee K. Roberts, PhD. The winning paper was published in the September/October 2008 issue of the Journal of the American Podiatric Medical Association (JAPMA).

The William J. Stickel Award is a retrospective honor that, each year, recognizes the best original research paper published in the Journal during the preceding calendar year.

“APMA is proud to honor this prestigious research project, which has closely examined the intricacies of salicylic acid use for podiatric medical treatment,” said APMA president Dr. Ronald Jensen. “The results of this research may greatly increase the understanding of treatment, as well as the effectiveness of those suffering from painful, debilitating foot ailments.”

The winning article is the only published biological evidence to date describing how salicylic acid-based keratolytic compounds remove human corns and calluses. The award-winning work was conducted at the Skin Biology Research group of Schering-Plough HeathCare Products, Inc., in Memphis, TN. An official announcement of the 2008 Stickel Award-winning paper will be publicized in the May/June 2009 issue of the Journal. Additionally, JAPMA is published with fully searchable text.

2008 STICKEL AWARD RECIPIENTS:

Ghanshyam D. Heda, PhD of Cordova, Tennessee, received his Doctor of Genetics degree from Osmania University, in Hyderabad, India. He has previously won several awards, including an invitational fellowship award from the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) to present lectures and initiate research collaborations with laboratories in Japan. Dr. Heda currently serves as an Assistant Professor of Biology at the Mississippi University for Women, in Columbus, MS.
