Recent Achievements of SAB Member William Ward, Ph.D.
Posted 2/5/2009

Bill Ward, Ph.D., is Associate Professor of Biochemistry at Rutgers University, the Center for Research & Education in Bioluminescence & Biotechnology (CREBB). Ward founded Brighter Ideas, Inc. in 2003, a biotechnology company focused on Green Fluorescent Protein (GFP)-based technology. In addition to being featured in our one of our Member Spotlights, he has also contributed a number of Perspectives to The SAB on a variety of topics.

In light of the recent Nobel Prize in Chemistry awarded to Osamu Shimomura and colleagues for their work in GFP, Matthew Herper wrote an article on the topic for Forbes.com in October 2008. It highlighted the work of Shimomura and honored the early research efforts of Douglas Prasher and Bill Ward, as well as those scientists who received the Nobel Prize for their research in GFP. The full article can be accessed here: "Biotech's Glowing Breakthrough Wins Nobel Prize".

For those of you not familiar with Ward’s research or his SAB articles, his background includes an extensive 35 years of research on GFP, with more than 120 publications in this field. About two decades ago, Ward was able to develop practical applications for GFP and utilized these for teaching protein purification, amongst other techniques, to industrial scientists. These teaching courses are now part of the agenda of Brighter Ideas, Inc. and a number of short courses for Protein Purification & Biochemical Separation are currently underway this year.

Ward was invited to the annual PepTalk meetings held by Cambridge Healthtech in San Diego, CA, this past month (January 2009). He was invited to give a 3-hour short course and a Featured Speaker presentation on the inventions of Brighter Ideas, Inc. For more information on the short courses offered by Brighter Ideas, Inc., in conjunction with CREBB at Rutgers University, please click here.

Last, but not least, Ward’s novel “Hey, Doc! Does Speling Count?” was published in November of 2008 by CCB Publishing. This satire on the failures of higher education is a result of several years of writing and many more years of real-life experience; Ward has been a faculty member of Rutgers University since 1977. A description of the book can be found at the CCB Publishing Website.

The SAB would like to congratulate Bill Ward on his recent achievements, and we invite other SAB members to send questions/comments to k.henwood@scienceboard.net.
